“Remembering”

This illustration was made for the Outline Illustration Festival in Jerusalem. the exhibition was site-specific, describing a place, a story or a memory that was held in the chosen location along the streets of the city. Together, the illustrations showcased a humane puzzle of a place and the delicate moments the city holds.

My illustration describes Sha’arei-Hesed Street in Jerusalem, from my great-great-grandparent’s eyes in the late 1930s. They moved there for two years. One night they left the neighbourhood back to Krakow, Poland, after a strong disagreement with their son (my great-grandparent). Just a few months later Germany invaded Poland and they found themselves trapped in the Krakow Ghetto, where they found their deaths.

I used archival photos of the neighbourhood as well as documenting its current houses and atmosphere. I also used the Yad Vashem archive, as there’s one photo of each remaining.
